Bubbles...
Who knew (I'm sure most everyone except me)? But, you have to exhale bubbles under water before you take your next breath when swimming. I kept coming up for my breath and having to exhale first. It wasn't working at all. Then, I put it on my status message on Facebook that I was having trouble and a friend of mine (Andrea), who swims, told me the enlightening news. Gotta love the Interweb. I knew I had to be doing something wrong. And... I was.

You learn something new everyday eh.
It seems I'm learning a couple things a day lately.
I remember taking lessons back in the late 90s - couldn't swim 25m without being really out of breath. Learning to breathe correctly was the biggest factor for me....

FWIW, I went from being a total non-swimmer in 1998 to comfortably finishing a 2.4 mile Ironman swim 6 years later.
Thanks Steve... I'm currently at 1998 and not trying to get to the Ironman. So, I just hope I can finish 500-750 meters. But, you're right, the breathing is super important. The most I could do is 50m without dying. I'm pretty sure that is entirely due to the breathing.
On the bright side... My knee is feeling kinda dodgy and the swimming is a nice change up. I thought I would hate it... But, so far, I kinda like it. More than biking.. weird.
You'll get to 500-750 pretty quick. Once you get the breathing and basic stroke technique right, aerobically you'll be able to swim for a long time..
I haven't been in the pool since 2004 (Ironman year), but am planning a sprint tri in June - need to get back at it pretty soon.

I had no idea you did an Ironman. Wow, that's awesome. I'll definitely ask if I have questions. Today's swim went a little better.
My one and only Ironman seems such a long time ago. Good memories...
